Methadone is a form of medicine called an opioid. Methadone is an opioid that is used mainly to wean people off their addiction to stronger opioids such as heroin. It is used as a substitution to these stronger opioids as those other opioids are far more dangerous. Methadone prevents the physical withdrawal symptoms that occur when these opioids (such as heroin) are stopped, this prevents the cravings of the drug. Overtime the individual is given gradually less and less of the drug methadone, untill it is completely absent. Although Methadone is addictive, it is less addictive than Heroin as it does not release endorphins as heroin does. This prevents addiction in most cases as it does not give the taker a 'high' as heroin does. Methadone is also sometimes prescribed for the relief of moderate to severe pain. It is also used for the treatment of severe coughs in terminally ill cancer patients i.e. people with lung cancer.
